Successful start-up of Segezha PM 10 rebuild

In September 2004, the Russian pulp and paper company, Segezha CBK, successfully started up its rebuilt Segezha PM 10. The rebuild was one of the largest forest industry projects to be carried out in Russia in recent years.

“Now we know we didn’t make a mistake when choosing the equipment supplier and technical concept,” says Vasily Preminin, General Director of Segezha CBK.

Despite the tight schedule, it was completed on time and in an excellent spirit of co-operation between Metso Paper and the Segezha project team.

PM 10 is a sack paper machine originally delivered by Metso in 1973. The objective of the rebuild was to increase production by 50 percent to a daily capacity of 550 tons and to achieve a substantial quality improvement. As a result of the rebuild the machine now turns out semi-extensible and standard sack paper of very good quality.

The Segezha rebuild comprised a new SymFlo dilution headbox, a couch roll and several other components for the wire section, a press section with SymBelt shoe press, impingement drying units, doctors and dryer bars for the cylinders, a ValReel and a WinDrum two-drum winder. It also included modernization of the stock preparation system, as well as a metsoDNA control system and PaperIQ quality control equipment.

Vasily Preminin, General Director of Segezha CBK, is proud that they opted for the most modern technology on the market for their paper machine.

“Now we know we made the right decision in choosing the equipment supplier and technical concept,” he says. “After the machine started, already the first visual assessment of the paper was enough to convince us.”

Segezha PM 10 – Board Machine analysis leads to optimal rebuild

The Segezha Pulp and Paper Mill JSC, located in Karelia in Russia, produces about 230,000 t/a of extensible sack kraft paper and sacks on two paper machines - PM 9 and PM 10.

The 7.1-meter-wide PM 10 was originally supplied by Valmet in 1975. Its average production speed is 450 m/min and its capacity is 110,000 t/a.

Segezha discussed a rebuild with Metso Paper in 2001, but decided to order a machine analysis first. In this way they could optimize the rebuild and find which structures and components could be reused. It was decided that the primary goal of the rebuild would be to increase annual production capacity by 50 % to about 165,000 t, to be achieved through a speed increase from 450 m/min to 750 m/min.

Another goal would be to improve the quality of the sack paper. Accordingly the machine analysis, consisting of a vibration study, mechanical condition tests and process analyses, was carried out in wintry Segezha in February 2002. It took five working days, including three days of shutdown. The final report was delivered at the beginning of April and Metso Paper specialists went through the report together with the customer in May.

Right scope of rebuild with 50 % capacity increase

The machine analysis showed which of the existing structures and components could be reused and which were in need of repair. It was decided, for example, that the frames of the forming section and the pick-up and transfer suction roll shells could be reused. In the dryer section, all of the cylinders and fabric rolls and most of the doctors could also remain after the rebuild. Some components of the old steam and condensate system could be utilized.

As a result, it was possible to optimize the Metso delivery to include a new stock preparation line, short circulation, a dilution-controlled headbox (to improve profiles), an extensive modernization of the press section and a new reel and winder. It was decided that all rolls, showers and doctors in the forming section and some components in the dryer section would be replaced. The steam and condensate system and the machine ventilation would be modernized, and a new lubrication system installed. Quality reporting, process control, machine logic and field instrumentation would be added.

The report also included maintenance and replacement recommendations to avoid unplanned shutdowns and enhance the efficiency and runnability of the machine. In September 2003, the Segezha Mill ordered an extensive rebuild of PM 10 from Metso Paper. The rebuilt production line will start up in early summer 2004, with the average production speed rising to 750 m/min and the daily capacity to 550 t.
